Designer

Rogie King

There’s something about Rogie. The header image says it all—he’s wildly energetic, contagiously optimistic, and full of imagination. On top of being unbelievably talented, Rogie is humble, caring, and thoughtful. It was inspiring to hear him talk about taking a risk on becoming a freelancer, how he rediscovered his childhood love of drawing, finding adventure in the rugged wilderness of Montana, and his belief that you can do the work you love and leave a legacy that matters. —Tina

Noah Stokes

We were stoked to interview Noah, who was candid about the odd path he took to becoming a designer and developer and the risk he took in going out on his own after working a couple less than satisfying jobs. So kids, turn on some girly pop music and start reading, but be warned: prepare to laugh and be challenged by the genius of Mr. Stokes—er, Motherfuton. Also, I’m supposed to write something about a raptor in here. —Ryan

Dan Cassaro

Dan has a way with words and a style all his own. Over the summer, he and girlfriend, Niamh, set out on a road trip in their kick-ass Scout and gave us a serious case of wanderlust. Dan’s been home for a few months and shared with us about his transition back into full-time freelancing, his most memorable experience on the road, why the power of typography shouldn’t be underestimated, and his thoughts on being discontent. —Tina

Phil Coffman

When TGD was still in the works, Phil and the gang (Noah and Trent) launched Method & Craft which became a big inspiration to us. We finally got the chance to speak with Phil and we’re inspired once again. Phil shared with us about engaging in the design community after spending years designing in anonymity, how his latest venture, Element, was born, and why he wants to leave a legacy that goes beyond his work. Phil, our virtual chat was a pleasure and when we do make the trek to Austin, we’ll get in some face-to-face time over a piece of pie—promise! —Tina

Mandy Brown

We’d like to preface this with a disclaimer: no matter what we write to introduce Mandy, it will be fucking inadequate. With that off our chests, we’ll just say that we’re huge admirers of the multi-talented, multi-tasking maven of the text and web. Thank you, Mandy, for talking with us about your craft and the creative community you’ve found in New York. Your passion for all that you do is evident; you’ve left us hungry and thoroughly inspired. —Tina

Kyle Steed

Kyle first came across our radar when we saw his 52 Profiles project. We loved his quirky style and the care he put into each image. So, when we needed a sketch last-minute for our TGD Steve Jobs tribute, we contacted him. It was a shot in the dark, but Kyle said yes. He also agreed to interview with us for TGD. We had the joy of chatting with the Steed about his journey thus far including how he got into illustration, his time in Japan, and his upcoming venture into full-time freelance work. —Tina

Matt Stevens

This is a man who’s making it happen. We were big fans of Matt’s AirMax1-A-Day Series before the interview and, needless to say, we’re now big fans of Matt. We were totally inspired listening to him talk about the self-inititated projects he’s done and what he’s learned about building his own momentum. He is super humble, genuine, and really good at his craft. Thank you, Matt, for reminding us that there is no excuse not to do what we love. —Tina

E.W. Thomason

When we set out to interview E.W. Thomason, we knew little about the illustrator whose work left our imaginations brimming with curiosity. After all, we didn’t even know if E.W. was a he or a she. So, we jumped down the rabbit hole, had a lovely chat, and discovered that Thomason really is as quick-witted and thoughtful as the work suggests. Take the journey with us as Thomason shares about memories of growing up in rural Alabama, taking a risk to pursue design, and the never-ending search to be satisfied creatively. Oh, and as for E.W.’s identity? We’ve been sworn to secrecy. —Tina

Chris Glass

I’ve looked up to Chris for quite a few years. Chris is a super talented guy and I’ve always liked his minimalist take on things. After talking with Chris, I’m even more impressed by his wealth of knowledge, his kindness, and, of course, his beard. We felt right at home interviewing a fellow Midwesterner who shares our love of the four seasons, a good grilled cheese sandwich, and a cold beer. Read on for Chris’ take on the perks of living in the Midwest, his search to be part of something bigger than himself, and his love of all things Ke$ha—yes, you read that correctly. -Ryan

Naomi Atkinson

Naomi is as lovely as they come. We were thoroughly charmed by her brilliant English accent and her genuine interest in inspiring others. So what are you waiting for? Go make yourself a cup of tea, get cozy, and sit down to a good read as Naomi shares about taking risks, why her Mum is her mentor, and whether or not she’s creatively satisfied. Cheers! —Tina
