Jon Contino

Jon’s determination, diligence, and talent are undeniable—just look at his prolific body of work. As a born and raised New Yorker, he comes from a long line of artists and credits his family for encouraging him to explore his creative side beginning at a young age. Although it seems that Jon was destined to work in a creative industry, he admits it wasn’t always an easy path to pursue, but he persisted on. We think you’ll find a resonating hope in Jon’s story—a hope which comes from knowing that we all struggle to find our voice at times, but it is there within us, waiting to be found as long as we’re willing to keep digging. —Tina

Jacqui Oakley

We’re easily fans of Jacqui’s illustration and hand lettering work. Her style is unmistakable, boasting wonderful textures and a stunning use of color, and she’s really good at what she does—after all, she’s been illustrating for over ten years! As a child, Jacqui travelled with her family and spent her formative years in the Middle East. It was fun to hear stories about her early adventures, the culture shift she experienced when her family moved from Bahrain to Canada, and why she chose illustration. Now, as a teacher and working illustrator, Jacqui has the opportunity to give back by sharing knowledge and experience with her students—just as she has with us. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Jacqui! —Tina

Aaron Draplin

We were completely stoked to talk with Aaron, a fellow native of Michigan. After speaking with him, we can assuredly say that he’s one of the most sincere, humble, hard working, and grateful guys we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Sure, he’s kind of a badass and we like that about him, but he’s a pretty big softie too, which we also really like—sorry to let the cat out of the bag, Aaron! We hope that his story—with all of its twists and turns, ups and downs, and straight, hard truths—will encourage you to ask the tough questions, blaze your own trail, and make the things you love. —Tina

Kate Bingaman-Burt

Kate does everything. No, really. In addition to illustration and design, she has done photography, installations, worked with textiles, created patterns, published zines, initiated several participatory projects, and to top it off, she’s been teaching for the last eight years. What keeps her going? She loves what she does, and her enthusiasm was obvious when we talked. Kate shared about changing majors a few times in college, her first design job, how her curiosity about consumerism started to influence her work, being inspired by family, and why she’s thinking differently about design education. —Tina

Tad Carpenter

Welcome to the wonderful world of Tad Carpenter! This guy’s work is off the charts awesome and so is he. We became a captive audience listening to Tad share his story with such energy and excitement. Born into a world where creating was the norm, Tad grew up with a unique perspective on work and life as he followed in his dad’s footsteps to become an illustrator. Tad told us about growing up in the halls of Hallmark, why he chose the non-art school route, what it’s like being married to another creative, and how his city—and the Midwest—has shaped him. This designer, illustrator, and most recently, teacher, has a lot to say and it’s all worth hearing—well, reading. So get to it. You won’t be disappointed. —Tina
